Top Miami-Texas AM Picks Two of the Toughest Teams in the CFP Will Face Off

The CFP is finally here, and Pamela Maldonado explains how to bet on Miami-Texas A&M.

Miami and Texas A&M have similar characteristics: they beat you, they hurt you, they pressure you and they force you to make decisions you don't want to make on third down. That's the tone here, two fencers in a phone booth with no room to breathe, nowhere to get comfortable, and every mistake is magnified.

It's the second game of the College Football Playoff and approaching is Ohio State, rested and waiting in the Cotton Bowl, watching two teams fight for the right to get there.Which team will advance?

The first round of the college football playoffs

No. 10 Miami, No. 7 Texas A&M -3

Saturday, noon, ABC,

Cathetan: Miami 10-2, 4-0 against AP teams; Texas A & M 11-1, 3-1 against AP teams

Opening Line: Texas A&M -4, O/U 52.5

Money line: Miami (+136);Texas A&M (-162)

Sare/Sub: 50.5 (O -108, U -112).

Miami's defense is real.Miami is no different

Miami's defense is legit -- period. The Canes have a pass rusher with a solid pass rusher, strong coverage, ability to rush the quarterback and steal possessions. If Miami pitches at Kyle Field, it's because the defense keeps it there.

The problem is what is happening on the other side.Miami's roof and floor are related to one variable.QB Carson Beck is protected, clean and on schedule.

When Beck is protected, Miami is efficient and capable of beating quality teams like Notre Dame.Beck is decisive;the ball comes out at the right time and the offense hums. When the pressure is on, efficiency drops without being able to shift into another gear. That vulnerability was clear as day in losses to Louisville and SMU, where Beck threw a combined six interceptions.

That's important against Texas A&M, a team built to disrupt. He can force Beck to cancel his first read, convert a third down and control a third-and-long, where Miami's offense is suspect.

The Hurricanes defense can do their job and still lose. They can win quickly, forcefully, even create an attack or two, but if the offense can not avoid being hit and survive under pressure, then the defense must stay on the field.

Miami's defense raised the floor, but Beck covered the ceiling.

Texas A&M is designed to fight, not sail

Offensively, the Aggies have the best skill set Miami has ever faced.KC Conception and Mario Craver are a real problem, emphasizing coverage rules and forcing defenses to deal in space, which is Miami's biggest defensive weakness.

The Aggies aren't one-dimensional, but their identity is physical. They can rely on runaway play when things get messy, a trait that affects postseason football and makes Mike Elko's team dangerous when viewed as an underdog or short-term favorite.

Defensively, A&M belongs in the same league as Miami. The pass rush is not good and the front can bring heat, but the profile is not perfect.South Carolina put points on people, Notre Dame moved the ball and Texas exposed discipline problems late in the game when the momentum turned. When you're asked to take control, that's when the cracks show for the Aggies.

The team is comfortable in conflict, less comfortable in sailing.

Betting Considerations: UNDER 51.5

Texas A&M's schedule creates the illusion of a shootout. But really, the Aggies don't create chaos, they react to it.Notre Dame, LSU, Arkansas and South Carolina all push the Aggies into a fast game. That adaptation is not the same as identity. The move from 50.5 to 51.5 is the perception of who A&M is, not who they're asking for.

Miami didn't want this game.

Haste in passing leads to handicaps.Miami has the second-best passer rating, while the Aggies have the 82nd player rating, which stops them when asked to execute cleanly.Marcell Reed has a season-high 10 interceptions, six in his last five games.

It turns out that Beck's skill diminishes when he breaks the pocket. His completion rate drops from 77.4% when clear to 51.3 under pressure.Yards per pass drops from 9 to 6.7 and his passer rating from 87 to 53, along with an interception problem.Against an A&M defense that ranks in the top 10 in pressures and sacks, points to stalled drivers.

The two quarterback is less than a quick recovery, to turn on the time and if the protection of the fences is continuous in the fbs), this is too little for the palm.

Should you choose a side?Miami +3.This is not the home of "SEC Division 1."When chaos sets in and the margins are thin, we're chasing points rather than winning.
