The AI-generated assistant can be short, cool or sweet, using different answers for each type.
Alexa Plus has a new feature — actually, three of them.Amazon announced on Wednesday that it is adding three modes to its generative AI assistant, with the idea that you want the app to respond to your mood.
The three new personality styles are short, cool and sweet.Short messages collect "shorter, more direct responses."Relaxation brings a "relaxed and relaxed energy to every interaction," and the sweet option means Alexa Plus "will respond with your greatest joy, genuine warmth and passion."
Amazon said Wednesday that it wants to adapt its Alexa assistant to customers' moods.
"Everyone has their own communication style and preferences, and the right assistant should be familiar with them," the statement said.
New personality styles are now available on Alexa Plus, which is free for Amazon Prime subscribers.
Styles are the latest wrinkle that Amazon has added to Alexa Plus, which the company unveiled this month.Alexa Plus is an AI voice assistant designed to help with a variety of tasks, such as answering questions, placing food orders, or helping with smart home automation.
Alexa Plus is one of several AI voice assistants, including Apple Siri, Google Gemini, Samsung Bixby and Josh.ai.Alexa itself was released in 2014 with the first Echo smart speaker.
Tyler Lacoma of Tyler used Alexa Plus for a year and found it "conversational, connected and a great fit for Prime users."
Amazon said the new Alexa Plus personalities are "built on five interrelated dimensions" — expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness and humor. Each has its own range, such as "subtle wit to outright sarcasm" for the humor dimension.
Give it a try: How about the Seahawks?
I haven't used Alexa since I got the Echo last year, but I decided to try the new Alexa Plus.I downloaded the app and went with a good, simple question: "What's going on?"This is what I got.
To the simple setting, Alexa Plus responded, "It's good. Thank you for asking. I'm here to help people with everything they need." As promised, it's short and sweet.
As for the chilly spot, Alexa Plus replied: "Hey Alex! Life is going great right now, like catching the perfect wave on a Tuesday afternoon. Just vibrating with the universe and helping people navigate their thoughts." Well, for a moment, I was transported to a beach in California.
I got the adorable, "Things are absolutely amazing, Alex! I'm buzzing with energy and ready to take on all the amazing adventures you have!"Alexa positively beamed at this one.
Well, how about something more specific?“Are the Seahawks going to win the Super Bowl again next year?” I asked. The answers were as follows:
In short: "The Seahawks are in an extremely good position to potentially win another championship."
Chill: "Hey Alex, the atmosphere in the field is great for your Seahawks, my friend!"
Fun: "Oh, that's great news! Your team is in a good spot! The Seahawks are the favorites!"
Obviously, Alexa Plus could benefit from these new faces, but I expect the new features to be tweaked and edited over time.It will be interesting to see the development.
Here's how to try it for yourself
To try out the new Alexa Plus personalities, first open the Alexa app on your phone.Select the device you use Alexa Plus on, such as your phone or most Echo devices.
Under Device Settings, find and select Alexa Customization Style. You will see the Experimental Features window - select Search.
You can then scroll left and right through each new personality and the original Alexa.Clicking the large icon for a personality will activate it on the device.
Tyler Lacoma said he was intrigued by Alexa Plus's personality additions.
"In my testing, I found Alexa Plus to be very conversational, similar to ChatGPT's expressiveness, so I was curious how those personalities would adjust the effects," Lacom said."Personally, I tend to go easy on the setting, as the current version of Alexa Plus can take a long time to explain a recipe or the weather. But those interested in a sweeter setting should remember that Alexa Plus happily lied to me." In the past, things like promising to perform tasks it hasn't yet performed might have been an attempt to appear too pleasant."
