New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Quahbet earned his first career win on Sunday, completing 19-of-27 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-7 decision over the Carolina Panthers, giving the club just its second win of the season.
CHARLOTTE, N.C.— New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Tyler Shaw picked up his first career win Sunday, completing 19-of-27 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-7 victory over the Carolina Panthers. It was the 2-8 Saints' first win since beating the New York Giants in Week 5.
"It's a good feeling in the locker room, I think, everyone is dancing, you're enjoying it, but it's just football," he said.
Shough became the first Saints tight end to start and win a game as a rookie since Dave Wilson in 1981.Shough's victory ended the longest active winless streak by a rookie side.In addition to Wilson and Shough, rookies Spencer Rattler, Ian Book and Danny Wuerffel have lost 11 games over that span.
"It's a great honor because of the organization," he said of the game.
Local, Rohde's second team selection of the year, was selected in Week 8, when the Rattlers went through the middle with a 23-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He made his first career start last week in a 34-10 loss against the Los Angeles Rams.
Saints coach Kellen Moore said before the RAMS Games that Nod's season will begin and the Wave will back him up.
The Saints entered this game with three starting offensive linemen after guard Trevor Benning was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers last Tuesday.Right tackle Talise Fawaja did not play with an ankle injury and Starting Center Eric McCoy is out for the season. The Saints also played their first game without wide receiver Rasheed Shahid, who was traded to the Seattle Seahawks.
Moore said Shaw took a "tremendous" step in his development on Sunday.Shaw had four long plays in Sunday's game, followed by a 62-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Olave, a 52-yard pass to Jowan Johnson, a 30-yard touchdown pass to Johnson and a 26-yard pass to Alvin Kamara.
"I thought he made some big plays, some off the charts," Moore said, citing deep passes to Johnson as an example."I thought he hung in the pocket really, really well [and] delivered."
The Saints' 266 passing yards were a season high, and Olave's 104 receiving yards were his most since Week 8 last season.Olave's season ended in Week 9 last year after he was carted off Bank of America Stadium on a stretcher due to a concussion.Johnson's 92 receiving yards were also a career high.
"Man, he's a great player. Me and him talk a lot and that scramble drill helped us a lot, especially on that first drive. That deep Juwanera helped us a lot, but we've seen him all year, he's led the scout team really well," Olav said.He sent all those blitzes and got sacked a few times, but he hung in there and gave us the ball well.”
The Saints have a bye next week and will play at home against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 12.
