Apple - Here's why the 512GB storage upgrade for the MacBook Neo is a better buy for most people -
Apple will launch its latest MacBook Neo tomorrow. As you read this, the shipping date has been pushed back, and if you're planning to buy a MacBook Neo, you might want to consider the 512GB storage option, and here's why.
Currently, 256GB is the base storage option on the iPad Pro, Vision Pro, iPhone 17 series, iPhone Air and the recently announced iPhone 17e.256GB is one of the storage options for the iPad mini, the iPad and the iPad Air announced with the M4.Upgrading the storage to 512GB in one of the above models will set you back $200.
When Apple updated the MacBook Air with an M5 drive last week, it increased the storage from 256GB to 512GB.So earlier, the M4 model starts at $999, but now, you have to pay $100 more (by default) because the M5 model starts at $1,099.Interestingly, Apple hasn't touched the storage capacity and pricing of its desktop Mac offerings, so upgrading from 256GB to 512GB on a Mac mini (M4) or iMac (M4) will set you back $200.
But if you look at the MacBook Neo, it starts at $599 ($499 for students/teachers) with 256GB, but the 512GB update is only $100, and since the update also comes with Touch ID, that's a better deal and a no-brainer upgrade. But I suspect it has to do with the slow read/write speeds on the SSDs used in the MacBook Neo.
Initial hands-on and unboxing videos for the MacBook Neo are now live, and the laptop will be unveiled tomorrow.
