Fertitas Reaches Agreement to Bring WNBA Back to Houston with Acquisition of Connecticut Sun - PaperCity Exclusive
The Comets are back next week for an official announcement
By Chris Baldwin // The Houston Comets are making a comeback, thanks to Tilman Fertitta. It's a big win for Houston and the WNBA.
The Fertitta family has reached an agreement to buy the Connecticut Sun and bring the WNBA back to Houston with an official announcement next week, sources told PaperCity that the deal "was done informally."The team is expected to change its name to the Houston Comets after the beloved former Bayou City WNBA team.
Houston Rockets owner Fertitas buys the Connecticut Sun, the current WNBA franchise will move to H-Town with its first season in the Bayou in 2027, a huge win for Houston, basketball and women's sports. Houston has long needed a WNBA team to complete its roster since the Comets folded in 2008, largely because of poor ownership. The Comets won their first four WNBA titles from 1997 to 2000.
Now the Comets are back with the WNBA more popular than ever - with a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement that raised the salary cap to $7 million per team. This new era of the Houston Comets will be backed by one of the best organizations in the NBA.
The new era Comets will play at the Toyota Center and have access to the kind of analytics that the best in sports rely on.But the biggest winners in this monumental deal are Houston sports fans.Houston now has a signature women's sports franchise.Tilmon Fertitta says bringing the WNBA back to Houston is the right thing to do.It's more about uplifting the city she loves than making money.
Even for the guy who always knows the key numbers for all his businesses.Tilman Fertitta preaches Know Your Numbers. But some things are more than numbers.
Fertitta is the US ambassador to Italy and his future could hold a bigger political role. But he still wants to do the right thing with Houston.Heal his home forever.
Bringing the WNBA back to Houston certainly does that.
