In 2006, a group of professional women in fields including graphic design, nursing, fundraising, marketing, business management and public service, came together to form Baltimore Recreation Alternatives (BRAS) out of a collective desire to gather with friends for an evening of dancing and socializing outside of the Baltimore bar scene. The idea for the organization originated from a 40th birthday party, which was attended by a number of lesbian friends. A couple of guests wanted to have another party right away, so they rented the same hall, sold all of the tickets within two weeks and, before they knew it, the women were shouting for more!
Since its formation, BRAS has filled an important niche in the community since its formation by organizing social gatherings just for women in a fun and comfortable environment. The mission is to design and implement recreational and social activities that promote diversity and harmony in the women’s community. By holding raffles at each of the dances, BRAS has also been able to support organizations including the Susan G. Komen Foundation, The Mautner Project, Chase Brexton Health Services, House of Ruth, Turnaround, Inc. and the Red Devils.
The next dance, “Go Green”, is scheduled for March 21, 2009 in Hunt Valley, and many more are being planned for 2009. For additional details about upcoming events or to join the BRAS email list, write to firstname.lastname@example.org or check out www.brasmaryland.com.
