On January 19, the Maryland Corporate Council (MCC) will officially launch to establish a new standard in the LGBT community in regards to business and corporate networking. The Council will allow LGBT professionals to take part in a unique group which provides mentoring and networking services and opportunities within the Maryland business community.

The creation of this group stemmed from the great scarcity of organizations that allow business professionals to network effectively and openly within the business sector. The MCC was created to organize LGBT professionals in a community that enables them to complete this specific task.

The goal of the MCC’s Board of Directors, which consists of local corporate businessmen and women, was to establish a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing together top-level LGBT corporate executives and leaders for networking, business advancement, and educational and charitable events.

“Our board is a very high-powered group of individuals, however we really didn’t know each other,” explains Ted Hart, co-founder and president of the Maryland Corporate Council.

The MCC also provides opportunities for young LGBT professionals to network in a safe and welcoming environment, as well. Hart continued, “We want to provide mentorship and scholarship to our community.”

The MCC’s focus is to strengthen the LGBT business community in many ways. Their vision provides an environment in which young LGBT professionals can mentor from seasoned professionals, therefore allowing mentorship for the next generation. The MCC also provides opportunities for those in profit and nonprofit organizations, as well as small businesses.

“This isn’t a group for just those in high-powered corporations, even though that’s how this group started,” Hart explained. “We want everyone to feel welcomed to join in this new business community.”

One of the highlights of the launch event is the keynote address by Mayo A. Shattuck III, CEO of Constellation Energy.

“To have an ally willing to lend his voice with such a business background is amazing,” Hart explained. “This isn’t just another gay group.”

Hart was eager to clarify that this group was not a political group. While it supports many causes, especially Equality Maryland, the MCC is primarily affiliated with just business.
